Big Walk Connection Issues: Join Code, Host, and Version Fixes
Can't join a Big Walk session? Work the official order: host loaded and warning-free, fresh join code, restarts, matching versions, then network vs performance.

Most Big Walk connection issues come down to four things, in this order: the host’s session state, the join code, client restarts, and version mismatches. Work through the steps below in order — they follow the official FAQ, checked on August 7, 2026 — before assuming anything is broken on your machine or your network.
One expectation to set up front: community reports show that some sessions fail even after all the basics check out, and no single workaround is guaranteed. What this page can promise is the shortest safe order to try, plus exactly what to record when nothing works. Success looks like this: the joiner loads into the host’s world with no connection warning on screen.
Step 1: Check the host first
The world belongs to the host, so every diagnosis starts there. Confirm all of the following:
- The person hosting is the original host whose save the group uses — nobody else can load that world.
- The host has opened the correct world, and their character has fully loaded.
- There is no connection warning in the bottom-left corner of the host’s screen. If the host shows a warning, nobody will join reliably no matter what joiners do.
Step 2: Use a fresh join code
A Join Code is generated per session. A code from last night, or from an earlier session today, is no longer valid. Get the current one from the host menu corner before the run starts, or from Session Details once the group is inside the world, and re-type it carefully.
Same-platform friends can skip the code and look for the host’s room in the active friend rooms list. Mac App Store players always use the code — that build has no Game Center friend rooms.
Step 3: Restart in the official order
The official restart sequence is specific:
- Fully close and reopen the joining player’s game first. “Fully close” means quitting the application, not just leaving the world.
- If joining still fails, the host fully closes and reopens their game too, then shares the new Join Code their fresh session generates.
Restarting only the router, or re-trying the same dead code, skips the steps that actually clear stuck session state.
Step 4: Match game versions
Crossplay only requires the first two segments of the version number to match: 1.4.7 plays with any other 1.4.x, but not with 1.3.x. Both sides should compare version numbers, update whichever client is behind, and then retry with a fresh code. The current baseline is Big Walk 1.4.7 (launch version), checked on August 7, 2026.
Step 5: Joined, but it stutters
If you get in but see stuttering, choppy voice, or characters teleporting, separate network problems from frame rate problems before changing anything. On PC, the official graphics order is:
- Lower Render Scale first.
- Then lower Quality.
- Once things stabilize, gradually raise Render Scale back up.
Remember the host’s machine carries the session — if only the host’s client is struggling, everyone feels it.
What community reports add (and what to avoid)
Players have reported connection failures on Steam-to-Steam, Switch 2, and PS5/Switch 2 combinations, including full 12-player rooms (community-reported via Reddit and Steam Discussions). In those reports, switching hosts, restarting, running speed tests, and verifying game file integrity did not reliably fix the problem. That is exactly why this page refuses to promise a universal fix.
Steam discussion titles also mention connection timeouts, failed reconnects, black screens, invisible saves, and crashes. We only have titles and short snippets from a search snapshot, not full threads with device details and outcomes, so treat those as symptom leads rather than diagnoses. One nuance worth knowing: a “save not visible” complaint may simply be the host-owns-the-save rule working as designed, not a bug — that question stays unresolved until it is reproduced (needs in-game verification).
Also note that the official version history lists fixes shipped in 1.4.7, but it cannot prove every older symptom is gone. If a patch note does not name your problem, assume nothing.
Conversely, some advice circulates that we will not repeat as instruction, because none of it has supporting evidence in the sources we checked: port forwarding, disabling your firewall, changing DNS, deleting saves, or reinstalling the game. Several of those are risky, and none is confirmed to help.
The exact in-game error text for a stale code, a version mismatch, a host quitting, or a platform service outage is also still unknown (needs in-game verification). When something fails, record the platform combination, who hosted, both version numbers, when the code was generated, the exact error wording, and whether it reproduces — then check the official FAQ and version history for current status. That record is what turns a frustrating evening into a report someone can actually act on.
